This is the first play by the newly found Blauwe Maandag Compagnie, a theatre company who wants to be an antidote to 'the dead performances which make the classic playhouse smell like morgues'. And is there anyone better than Don Quixote who epitomises this crusade? Inspired by Tadeusz Kantor 's (1915-1990) belief that theatre may and must be paradoxical and therefore must perform tragic comedies and comic dramas, Luk Perceval is developing his own style.

"After 5 years working for the National Theatre (Koninklijke Nederlandse Schouwburg) I was mentally and physically ill because I could no longer cope with the dull rehearsals without the least bit of creativity. I felt like a puppet in an historical reconstruction. Moreover the listless acting of my colleagues at the time resulted in a huge disinterest of the public. I wanted something else and as a result the Blauwe Maandag Cie was founded. In this company I was going to try and give a highly personal interpretation of what I had read and seen of Peter Brook and Tadeusz Kantor. A Don Quixote in a suit of cardboard armour…"
